Originally estimated to be valued between $80,000 and $120,000 by Sotheby’s, Ohtani’s extraordinary on-field achievements, such as being the first MLB player to achieve 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season, fueled the card’s final bid soaring well beyond initial expectations.
Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of collectibles, expressed his admiration for the Ohtani card’s significance in the sale, placing it in the premier lot of the evening. The event took place at the unique venue of Harlem Parish, a former church transformed into a spacious event location. Notable attendees included iconic figures like NFL legend Tom Brady, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, YouTube sensation Logan Paul, and rapper Meek Mill.
A standout moment unfolded as Kraft, seated alongside Brady in the front row, made waves by acquiring a Tom Brady 2000 Playoff Contenders Rookie Ticket Autograph card for a cool $120,000. The night was brimming with other notable sales, with rising MLB star Elly De La Cruz’s 2022 Bowman Chrome 1st Bowman Prospect Autograph Superfractor card outpacing Ohtani’s record sale, garnering $360,000.
The pinnacle of the auction arrived with a bid of $780,000 for the 2005-06 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Dual Logoman Autographs card, showcasing NBA icons Michael Jordan and Julius Erving. This unique card, adorned with game-used NBA logo patches from the jerseys of both legendary players, commanded an awe-inspiring price tag.
