Historic Baseball Card Sets at REA’s May Encore Auction

Robert Edward Auctions (REA) is once again captivating sports memorabilia enthusiasts with its May Encore auction, a grand display of over 3,600 lots featuring a wide range of treasures from the world of sports collectibles. From complete sets of 1950s baseball cards to rare vintage gems and even historical pieces like a check signed by Honus Wagner post-retirement, this auction is a must-see for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

The auction kicked off on Thursday and will run for an exciting ten-day period, showcasing items that span the history of baseball and modern sports card collecting. Among the early standout lots are gems like the T206 White Border Ty Cobb Bat Off Shoulder card from 1909-1911 with a rare Uzit back, as well as a Ty Cobb rookie card from the 1907 Wolverine News Postcard series, both boasting historical significance and rarity.

In addition to these iconic cards, the auction features vintage baseball sets such as the complete 1957 Topps Set and a near-complete 1958 Topps set, alongside high-grade cards from the 1950s Bowman and Topps collections, including rookie cards of baseball legends like Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and Sandy Koufax. A highlight for collectors is the complete set break of the iconic 1951 Bowman set, offering a chance to own a piece of baseball history.

Not limited to cards, the auction also presents notable memorabilia pieces, such as a ticket stub from the 1957 NFL Championship Game and a rare 1920 Real Photo Postcard featuring the Harvard football team that competed in the Rose Bowl, shedding light on the rich tapestry of sports history beyond just trading cards.

REA President Brian Dwyer shared his enthusiasm for the auction’s lineup, emphasizing the exceptional quality of the lots following their recent successful $15.4 million spring sale. Dwyer highlighted the strong interest from collectors as well as the premium nature of the items included in this auction, setting the stage for an exhilarating bidding experience.

For those eager to participate, the auction will be open for bidding until May 19 on the REA website, with starting bids set at a modest $10 for each item, providing both seasoned collectors and newcomers with the chance to acquire rare and top-tier sports memorabilia. This auction not only serves as a prime opportunity to expand one’s collection but also serves as a celebration of the vibrant history encapsulated in sports collectibles.
