Card Grading Surge: Ohtani and Stroud Shine

The month of February witnessed an electrifying surge in trading card grading activity, with over 1.6 million cards making their way through the authentication process. This uptick in figures represents a substantial 25% increase compared to the same period last year, signifying the enduring allure of collecting in the sports memorabilia market.

Among the standout athletes driving this grading frenzy were Shohei Ohtani and CJ Stroud, whose cards commanded significant attention from collectors and enthusiasts. Shohei Ohtani’s transition to the Los Angeles Dodgers and CJ Stroud’s impressive NFL season catapulted them to the top of the grading charts, with a combined total of over 43,000 cards processed by PSA alone. Their rising popularity in the collectors’ realm is evident in the overwhelming submissions for grading, reflecting a growing demand for their trading cards.

PSA led the charge in card grading volume, handling a staggering 1.24 million cards in February. Baseball cards emerged as the frontrunners in submissions, with over 293,000 cards graded, further solidifying the sport’s enduring appeal in the trading card market. The influx of modern cards from the 2023 sports season, particularly in football and baseball, fueled the grading frenzy across various grading companies, including SGC, ISA Grading, and Beckett Grading.

SGC showcased a diverse range of graded players, from iconic legends like Michael Jordan to emerging stars like Ohtani and Stroud, underscoring the broad spectrum of interests within the collector community. ISA Grading and Beckett Grading also reported a substantial number of submissions, with Beckett’s most sought-after issue being the 2023 Topps NOW Connor Bedard rookie sticker.

The surge in card grading activities not only spotlights the vibrant dynamics of the sports memorabilia market but also underscores the evolving tastes of collectors and investors. The growing interest in both modern and vintage sports cards hints at a promising future for the hobby, with new talents like Ohtani and Stroud shaping the narrative and captivating audiences with their on-field performances and off-field collectibles.

As the trading card grading landscape continues to evolve and expand, the allure of owning a piece of sports history remains a driving force behind the hobby’s enduring popularity. The stories encapsulated within each graded card serve as a nostalgic bridge between past glories and future aspirations, immortalizing the achievements of athletes like Ohtani and Stroud in the hearts of collectors worldwide.
