Legendary Red Auerbach’s Celtics Memorabilia Hits the Auction Block

Red Auerbach, the legendary coach of the Boston Celtics, has left an indelible mark on the basketball community with his nine NBA championships in eleven years. Now, fans and collectors have a rare opportunity to own a part of history as Auerbach’s most successful season memorabilia, as well as other personal items from his Hall of Fame career, are being auctioned by Heritage Auctions. The collection, consigned by the Auerbach family, will make its debut in the prestigious Platinum Night event.

One of the highlights of the auction is Auerbach’s 1965 NBA championship ring. This ring represents a season where the Celtics achieved a remarkable 62-18 record under Auerbach’s guidance. Alongside the championship ring, Auerbach’s Coach of the Year Award and his personal league championship trophy from the same season will also be up for auction, showcasing the pinnacle of his coaching achievements. The estimated value of the 1965 championship ring is $80,000, and the trophy is expected to bring in $30,000.

Another notable item is the ring Auerbach received as the general manager of the Celtics’ 1984 championship team. This highly sought-after piece is expected to fetch upwards of $100,000. The 1984 Celtics team is regarded as one of the greatest teams in NBA history, and Auerbach’s ring represents his contribution to the team’s success.

Apart from the championship rings, the auction will feature personal items that give a glimpse into Auerbach’s life. One such item is a Washington Capitols team jacket from the 1940s, likely worn by Auerbach during his early coaching days. The jacket, signed by Auerbach himself, is a unique piece that combines both historical and personal significance. Additionally, there is a collection of Auerbach’s smoking pipes, complete with a stand and humidor, providing an intimate touch to the memorabilia on offer.

Other notable lots include two signed 1960-61 team photos, a championship watch from the 1981 Celtics, autographed photos of Auerbach with Bill Russell, a signed 1960s photo of Bob Cousy dedicated to Auerbach, and various championship rings and jewelry pieces given to his wife and family. These items not only reflect Auerbach’s success but also celebrate the relationships he forged with the players and loved ones in his life.

This auction follows a previous sale of Auerbach items in 2011, continuing the chance for basketball enthusiasts to own a piece of the sport’s rich history. The bidding for these rare and historic items will conclude on Friday, February 25, providing a unique and limited-time opportunity for collectors and fans to celebrate the legacy of one of the NBA’s most revered figures. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary chance to own a tangible piece of Red Auerbach’s unforgettable contributions to the world of basketball.
